Hi, my name is Liv.
I'm a South Florida native and a proud member of Generation Z.
Because of Covid-19, the majority of my generation grew up socializing online. At the time in our lives when we craved socialization the most, we couldn't go out into the world — so we turned to social media. I couldn't go to my high school graduation party, so I went on Instagram Live. I couldn't go to prom, so my friends made TikTok videos in our prom dresses (socially distanced, of course).
Even after the pandemic, social media use is still on the rise. According to a recent study, there are an estimated 80 million monthly TikTok users in the United States alone.
In recent years, TikTok has transformed from a place where people post silly videos to an online marketing center for businesses worldwide. According to TikTok's website, 67% of TikTok users agree that the platform inspired them to shop even when they weren't looking to do so. 74% of TikTok users say that TikTok has inspired them to find out more about a product, brand or person, and 66% of users agree TikTok has helped them decide what to buy.
